Why Counselling?

Let’s face it, it can be difficult to find the right sort of help and support when you most need it.

You may have already tried different ways of helping yourself, with varying degrees of success.

Alternatively, you may have turned to friends or family for assistance.

However, it can be difficult for people who are close to you to be detached and impartial.

Furthermore, it can sometimes be hard to talk to them about certain problems about which you may feel embarrassed or ashamed.

That’s what makes talking to a Counsellor different.

Counselling gives you the opportunity, time and space to talk freely and tell your story.

It also gives you a private, safe and confidential setting in which to express yourself, free from interruptions.

For my part, I will

  • Listen to you attentively and patiently, while you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours
  • Value what you say
  • Respond to you with compassion and empathy
  • Warmly accept you as you are, without judgement or criticism
  • Strive to understand you as fully as possible
  • Relate to you in an honest and genuine manner

While I am trained and skilled in providing the optimum conditions for effective therapeutic relationships, I firmly believe that you are the expert in your own life.

You have an innate ability to grow and develop, even if, at this time in your life, that may have become blocked.

Our counselling relationship will be very much a collaborative or two-way process, where we both have a part to play.

My job does not involve telling you what to do or giving you advice.

You are in control of any changes you wish to make.

I will, nevertheless, support and guide you to find your own unique solutions to your problems.

How you can benefit from counselling and therapy

Counselling and therapy are highly effective with recent research showing that 80 per cent of clients benefit.

Of course, exactly how you benefit will be unique to you.

But by feeling heard, understood and accepted, you will hopefully feel able to identify any changes required to improve the parts of your life that have become stuck or painful.

And to feel empowered to start taking action.

You can then begin living your life with a greater sense of happiness, health and well-being.

"Neil helped me with many anxiety and stress-related issues during a difficult time in my life. Within a short span of time, he helped me understand some of the concerns surrounding my situation and to recognise and accept myself. Neil was always caring, approachable, compassionate and professional. He helped me feel like I was not alone in this world and I looked forward to meeting with him every week."
"Neil Ward Counselling services has helped me tremendously. It gave me the opportunity, privacy and the space I needed to just be me and focus on what had bought me into counselling. I found Neil Ward to come across as a genuine and accepting person and this has empowered me to be accepting of myself. Thank you, Neil."
"I started seeing Neil about seven months ago after the break up of a relationship. The sessions have been invaluable. As well as being a fantastic counsellor, Neil is a lovely man. I can sometimes sideline what I need in life, and Neil has managed to gently point this out and get me to consider some important things differently. I’m extremely grateful to him. Everyone should have a Neil!"
