Your appointment

Are evening and Saturday appointments available?

Sessions are available at various times during the week, including daytimes, evenings and weekends.

How long do sessions last for and how frequent are they?

Sessions last 50 minutes and usually take place weekly. However, the length and frequency can be tailored to meet your individual needs. For example, some people might prefer longer sessions. In this case, the cost would be charged on a pro rata basis.

How many sessions will I need?

You may only need a few sessions to work on a particular issue or you may benefit from working for a longer period of time. You are in charge of how long you wish to come for. I offer counselling on a short, medium and long term basis. In addition to this, we will have regular reviews of our work, to ensure that we are proceeding in an effective manner, and for you to give me feedback about the service you are receiving, if you wish to do so.

What happens at the first session?

Our first meeting is exploratory in nature and entails no obligation on your part to continue with further sessions. It gives you the opportunity to discuss what has brought you to counselling at this point in your life. It also gives you a chance to think about what you would like to achieve by coming for counselling.

You might also like to spend some of the session finding out more about what is involved in coming for counselling and to ask me questions.

As the counselling relationship is a two-way process, you will have the chance to decide whether you feel that you can work with me, and I can indicate whether I feel that I can work with you, in an effective manner, within my level of expertise and competence. If counselling is not the most suitable option for you, I can refer you on to other sources of support.

If we decide to proceed, then we would cover issues such as appointment times, cancellation procedures, fees and confidentiality.

The first session is charged at the rate given below.

How much do sessions cost?

Each session costs £35. Sessions lasting longer than the normal length of time, e.g. for 1.5 hours, are charged for on a pro rata basis.

When do I pay?

Fees are usually paid at the end of each session. However, some people prefer to pay for a number of sessions in advance.

What happens if I have to cancel an appointment?

I ask for 24 hours notice of cancellation. Appointments missed and not cancelled are charged at the normal rate.

What about confidentiality?

Whatever you tell me during our work together is confidential. However, like all counsellors, who are members of the BACP, I am required to have regular supervision of my counselling work with a senior counsellor. This means that I may discuss aspects of my work during supervision. Clients’ identities are never revealed. In addition to this, there may be some situations, such as if you were in danger of harming yourself or someone else, when I may feel unable to hold confidentiality. If this were the case, I would discuss my course of action with you beforehand.
